The Livingseas Restoration & Research Internship is a four-week, field-based programme designed for marine biology students, graduates and early-career marine scientists seeking real-world experience in coral reef conservation. This internship prioritises practical research components over introductory-level training, focusing on strengthening field and analytical skillsets.
Reviews
Very good! l feel like I got everything that I was hoping for out of this internship. I learned a lot about what goes behind coral restoration scene (site selection, strategies, planning, etc.) while also gaining a lot of knowledge and fundamental skills in coral/benthic/fish monitoring.
I loved how we were able to do activities such as coral restoration. Getting involved in those activities gave me more purpose and fulfilment in a way that I get to have a feel of being in the production team and the maintenance team.
I would describe my overall internship experience as a pivotal moment that reignited my passion and deepened my commitment to coral conservation and sustainability. It served as a meaningful starting point that encouraged me to explore the field more seriously and with greater purpose.
Throughout the internship, I gained not only technical knowledge but also personal growth. I developed more confidence in diving while becoming more aware of the areas where I can continue to improve. This experience has shaped me into a more responsible and mindful diver, especially in practicing environmentally conscious behaviors underwater.
Beyond the technical aspects, the experience was made even more meaningful by the people I was surrounded with. The team and fellow interns were incredibly supportive, and the time spent socializing after work fostered genuine connections. Being immersed in a different culture and sharing everyday moments with such great people made the experience even more enriching.
Additionally, the internship significantly expanded my understanding of coral conservation such as its processes, challenges, and the broader impact it has on marine biodiversity and ecosystem health. It allowed me to see the interconnected “ripple effects” of conservation efforts, from protecting marine life to supporting coastal communities.
Overall, this internship was not only a learning experience but also one of the most cherished moments of my life. It strengthened my skills, broadened my perspective, and inspired me to continue contributing to marine conservation in a more informed, responsible and purposeful way.
My main goals were to become a confident diver, gain experience in scientific diving, understand the nitty gritty of data collection for coral restoration project, and to recalibrate my knowledge as a marine biologist. If I were to rate the extent of achieving my goals, it would be a 10/10.
