About the organisation

Gambian Marine and Environmental Conservation Initiative offers the unique opportunity to get involved with preservation of our beautiful ecosystem on the West Coast of Africa. Our work focuses on marine conservation, protected areas development, mangrove preservation, education on sustainable/self-sufficiency living & renewable energy. We are partnered with various organizations focusing on work with permaculture, waste management and sea turtle conservation.

With years of experience working in education, hosting and facilitating workshops/training we would like to open up our field school to visiting volunteers interested to support our work and to learn more about marine and environmental conservation in The Gambia.

About the role

Working as an RA for us is a unique opportunity to gain valuable field experience and knowledge relevant to the conservation, research, and management of endangered marine species (or expand on existing experience):

  • Learn and practice research and conservation methodologies and general field skills with our experienced team;
  • Practical training in data collection and support for a project focused on endangered wildlife;
  • Access to staff and biologists for gaining insight into professional conservation work;
  • Access to unique opportunities to work and train on the field regularly
  • Opportunity to learn or improve your local languages and share your English skills with the local staff


  • 18+ years old
  • Experience or interest with project management in the field of marine, environmental and wildlife conservation.
  • Willingness to sign an indemnification/waiver (!).
  • Travel Health Insurance that covers COVID-19-related expenses.
  • Excellent physical fitness and ability to walk long distances
  • Professional demeanor.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Proficiency in English is highly desired, but not a requirement.
  • Experience working abroad, under harsh weather conditions, especially in a tropical country desirable
  • Flexible, patient, and able to follow instructions

Salary and benefits

Because of limited available funds and a preference for paying our local research assistants fair wages, the position is voluntary, and no salaries or stipends are paid. RAs will be expected to contribute US$700/month for their room and board in a self-serviced apartment. This fee covers the cost of entrance fee to the protected areas, renting rooms, paying a cook for three daily vegetarian meals, water, internet, and electricity for the duration of their , a phone with a local sim as well as many other benefits / activities that we will prepare to ensure your time with us is enjoyable with excursion trips every two weeks.

Each PA will be responsible for their own travel expenses to and from The Gambia, including any international travel costs. The RA is also expected to cover any other expenses outside the project, like extra food and transportation that are not pertinent to the project work or would be considered personal trips.

PAs are expected to pay the first month of their stay upon acceptance of the position.
