Introducing the Marine Scholarship Programme
The Marine Scholarship Programme is a comprehensive nine-month training programme for six 18-25 year old Seychellois with a passion and commitment to the marine sector. Through this training we will be helping young adults to forge new careers in the Blue Economy, the biggest growing sector in Seychelles, helping to create the next generation of highly skilled professionals, innovators and stewards of the Seychelles marine environment.
Programme Overview
Offering in-depth practical and theory training centred around the marine environment, participants will develop skills to increase opportunities for employment. The Programme, based across Mahé and the inner islands, includes six months of core training delivered by WiseOceans and GVI Seychelles and three months of placements with our partner organisations in both the public and private sectors. These placements will be tailored to participants’ individual interests and skills, helping to build connections and experiences in the workplace.

GVI Cap Ternay Base has a strong focus on Marine Surveying. As a diver, during my time here I undertook the Emergency First Responder (EFR) refresher course. I am currently also training to be able to survey commercial fish. As a certified Dive Master already, I was able to asset the training of other volunteers who were undertaking their Advanced Open Water Course – this was a particularly exciting opportunity as I had never assisted the delivering of a course before.
In addition to daily dives, there are numerous regular duties that must be completed during time at Cap Ternay. These include taking care of the dive equipment, and undertaking nudibranch, coral watch and invertebrate surveys. GVI also takes part in regular beach cleaning activities.
I will leave GVI in August, with an improved sense of confidence in my skills and abilities. Newly obtained skills include surveying (especially fish) and the ability to work as part of a large team.
