When people imagine ocean life, they often think of whales, sharks or colourful coral reefs. However, some of the most important creatures in the ocean are almost invisible to the naked eye. Plankton may be tiny, but they play a huge role in keeping our oceans and our planet healthy. 

Understanding plankton helps children see that even the smallest organisms can have a powerful impact. 

 

 

 

What Is Plankton?  

Plankton are tiny organisms that drift in the water. The word plankton comes from a Greek word meaning “drifter.” Unlike fish or marine mammals, plankton cannot swim against strong currents. Instead, they move with the flow of the ocean. 

There are two main types of plankton. Phytoplankton are microscopic plants that use sunlight and water to make their own food through photosynthesis. Zooplankton are tiny animals that feed on other plankton. Together, they form the base of the ocean food chain. 

The Foundation of Marine Life 

Almost all marine life depends on plankton in some way. Zooplankton eat phytoplankton. Small fish eat zooplankton. Larger fish eat smaller fish. Whales, including the enormous blue whale, feed directly on plankton such as krill. 

Without plankton, the ocean food web would collapse. They are the starting point for life in the sea. Teaching children about plankton helps them understand how ecosystems are connected and why balance in nature is so important. 

Plankton and the Air We Breathe   

Plankton are not only important for ocean life. Phytoplankton produce a significant portion of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere through photosynthesis. Some estimates suggest that between 50%-80% of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean. 

This means that these microscopic organisms help support life on land as well as in the sea. It is a powerful reminder that the ocean and the rest of our planet are closely linked. 

Tiny Creatures, Big Impact 

Although plankton are small, they respond quickly to changes in temperature, pollution and ocean chemistry. Scientists study plankton to understand how climate change is affecting marine ecosystems. 

Changes in plankton populations can affect entire food chains. If plankton decline, fish stocks may also decrease, which can impact both wildlife and human communities that rely on seafood.

A World Invisible to the Naked Eye 

One of the most fascinating things about plankton is that most of them can only be seen under a microscope. Their shapes can be surprisingly intricate, with delicate spines, transparent bodies and unusual patterns. 

Learning about plankton encourages children to look beyond what is immediately visible. It shows that science often begins by observing what others might overlook.
